1. Overview
The ideal voltage and current wave forms in the power system are sine waves with a frequency of 50 Hz, however, the wide-ranging applications of nonlinear power equipment (such as high-power thyristors, inverters, UPS, switching power supplies, intermediate frequency furnaces, energy-saving lamps, etc.) generates a large amount of distorted harmonic current. Harmonic current coupling will generate harmonic voltage on the line. The Fourier series decomposition is performed on the non-sinusoidal distortion current, wherein the component whose frequency is the same as the power frequency is the fundamental wave, and the component whose frequency is an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency is the harmonic. This type of harmonic "pollution" could cause great harm to the power grid and users, so harmonic management is called as a "green project."
Due to the development of power electronics technology, active power filter (APF) began to scale application. Compared with the traditional harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation device, APF has a fast response, can real-time tracking and compensation for each harmonic, and has the functions of compensating for harmonics, reactive power compensation and balancing three-phase current. At the same time, APF has the advantages of not being affected by system impedance, no hidden danger of resonance, high compensation efficiency, and has been widely used in power supply systems of various industries.
